What to buy your Norwegian friend/partner/colleague/sister in law etc this Christmas.
Most of us know what it is like to miss home sometimes. Especially during the festive season, the longing for home and family can be really hard to handle – the choice to stay abroad or far away for Christmas and other high seasons isn’t always an easy one and often made as a compromise.
There are thousands of Nordic people living in the UK and we at ScandiKitchen has made it out mission to make sure everyone can get that little bit of flavours from home when they need it.
Here are our top suggestions for what to buy a Homesick Norwegian this Christmas:
- Kvikklunsj. This is a bar of chocolate – eaten all year around. Such an iconic Norwegian treat, loved by all. If you only buy one thing, buy this one.
- Julebrus – this is Christmas soda. We stock two kinds, and everyone has their own favourite, so maybe get one of each, just to be sure.
- Solo – this is an orange soda, very nostalgic. Get one of these for your friend.
- Big Bar of Melkesjokolade – this is THE Norwegian milk chocolate. Expensive, but its 250g so it’s a big bar. Also available with nuts (Firkløver).
- Cloudberry jam. To be honest, real cloudberries would be better – but hard to come by even frozen as they are so seasonal – but for Christmas, Norwegians like to mix cloudberries with whipped cream. The jam has all the great taste of these berries and can be used, as a sub.
- Smash chocolate. The best. It’s essentially corn chips (think bugles) dipped in milk chocolate.
- Brown cheese. A Norwegian staple.
- Toro Quick cook rice pudding – a great quick fix. Or get the pudding rice for your friend to make their own.
- Laban jelly men – a reminder of childhood. Sugar coated jelly sweets.
- Gløgg – we don’t stock a Norwegian brand gløgg, but we suggest getting the ready-to-drink Blossa from Sweden – it’s amazing.
