How to be Swedish, lesson no. 301: Kalles Kaviar
When: All days of the week are made for Kalles Kaviar.
If you have been to Sweden, you know that Kalles Kaviar is a breakfast staple in almost every home. It is even available at the Breakfast Buffet at hotels – to the confusion of everyone visiting.
Known is the blond boy shown on the product, and some would go as far as to say he is a Swedish icon. He first appeared on the tube in 1954 and has since stayed, which is no surprise as he is the son of the then CEO. Like him, most swedes smile wide when eating the smoked roe with crispbread and egg.
However, despite popular belief and the pellicular packaging of the product Kalles Kaviar is not to be used as toothpaste as it is in fact “Fish in a tube” (as described by a curious British taster of Kalles). Though, not the whole cod is used. It is merely the roe which is later mixed with tomato paste and spices, giving it its slightly sweet and salty flavour.
With a quick google search, you can find plenty of videos of people trying it, and truth be told it seems like Kalles Kaviar is a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it.
