Making gingerbread houses is a popular advent activity across Scandinavia, and an excellent way of spending some time with the children. Assemble the house for your children, them then let them loose with icing and sweets to decorate.
How to assemble:
1. Melt some sugar in a thick-bottomed saucepan. Take care, the sugar will be super hot – KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN).
You can also melt/temper chocolate and use this as glue if preferred (not as durable).
2. Use the sugar as a glue to stick the sides of the house together.
3. Leave to dry for a few minutes until the caramel has hardened.
For the Icing:
Combine 300g of icing sugar in a big bowl, mix with one egg white and a small squeeze of lemon juice. Add the thick mixture to a piping bag, cut a hole in the tip of the bag and decorate your house.
Finish off with sweeties or other decorations.
