Scandinavian Food

What's this "healthier stuff" and "open sandwich" business all about?

Our freshly baked bread is not only really tasty but also contains a lot less processed stuff than most other sandwich breads. The rye bread is soft, moist and scrumptiously delicious. It is made from whole rye kernels and other goodies and packed with nutritional stuff and fibres - all round good for the belly and the whole system. Our white loaves are made according to traditional Danish bakers' recipes and in addition we offer a range of freshly baked rolls, pastries and other Scandinavian specialty breads.

Lucy Thomas, who is a Senior Product Developer at innocent drinks, is a big fan of people eating more rye bread to be that bit healthier: 'Not only is Rye bread an excellent alternative to normal wheat-filled bread, it also contains wholegrain goodness (B vitamins, vitamin E and lots of minerals) and is a great way up upping your dietary fibre intake'.

As the Earl of Sandwich worked out, two pieces of bread means little mess. But it also means a lot of bread in each sandwich and at Scandinavian Kitchen we think people eat enough bread as it is and prefer to focus on the good stuff on top to create a healthier balance overall. Hence the open sandwich.

What is BTF?

Simply put it means Bread-To-Filling ratio. There are scientific studies on this subject which must mean it is a very important measurement. However, as strange as it may seem, there are no official government targets or legislation relating to BTF. We're working on setting up a lobby to remedy this.

BTW, our BTF is one of the best in the business.

How to eat an open sandwich

The humble open sandwich is simply one piece of bread with the filling on top. It is true that it takes a bit to work out how to eat them without making a mess so we have come up with a few pointers for the uninitiated and those who want to try something new:

Method A - No mess guaranteed:

  • Open box, flatten edges to make a 'plate' (or put sandwich on a plate)
  • Pick up knife and fork
  • Cut off a piece of the sandwich (corners are good to begin with)
  • Spear with fork and insert fork and food in mouth
  • Pull out fork and chew. Repeat over

Method B - Hand delivery with support:

  • Pick up sandwich by the sandwich tray
  • Gently push sandwich forward so the front is free from the tray (unless you are a keen fan of cardboard)
  • Bite down and enjoy. Repeat over
Method C - Hand delivery freestyle:

  • Pick up sandwich like a waffle, thumb and index finger along the side of the bread and rest the other fingers on the bottom of the bread.
  • Raise sandwich to approximately head height (note, your own head height, if not it could be embarrassing, especially if sitting down), and start eating
  • Repeat over (and wipe off the stuff on the tip of your nose)

Method D - Head bangers' ball (The Lordi Method):

  • Place sandwich on table approximately two feet in front of you
  • Bend at waist, lean forward till mouth is just above sandwich
  • Dip face in sandwich and eat away, move back and forth repeatedly to create head banging effect.
  • Grunt, then ask politely for a napkin.
